Frequently Asked Questions

Which sectors and industries does Solupak supply?

Solupak formulates, manufactures and packages water soluble solutions for a wide range of sectors, including agriculture and horticulture, catering, construction, dental, healthcare, optical, facilities management, hospitality and large retailers. Every formulation features a tailored approach of pre measured dosing, hygiene and handling requirements for the sector it’s built for.

How is water soluble technology used in agriculture and horticulture?

chemicals, fertilisers and nutrients can be packaged into water soluble sachets for safe, pre-measured dosing. The water soluble sachet simply goes into water and the application is ready. This is particularly useful in precision farming, where accurate, repeatable dosing cuts down on both product waste and the handling risk that comes with concentrated chemicals.

What water soluble solutions does Solupak offer for the catering industry?

Solupak manufactures a pre-dosed cleaning range for catering environments, covering degreasers, surface sanitisers, disinfectants and antiviral cleaners, all designed for use in busy kitchens. Each water soluble sachet is pre-measured, enabling catering teams to get the same dilution every time without measuring chemicals by hand.

Can water soluble packaging be used in construction?

Yes. Solupak processes and packs building and cement additives into water soluble pods of up to 1kg, covering both powder and liquid products used on site. The pre-dosing system reduces waste, speeds up on-site application, and leaves minimal packaging behind once the job is finished.

How do water soluble sachets and pods support dental, optical and medical facilities?

In dental and optical settings, Solupak covers everything from additives to tinting solutions. Our pre-dosed formulas provide reliable and quick dissolution in fast-paced clinical environments. In medical facilities, water soluble sachets are used to contain contaminated linen and uniforms at the point of collection: the sachet goes straight into the washing machine and leaves very little packaging residue during the wash.

Does Solupak supply water soluble detergents for medical device manufacturers?

Yes. Solupak has manufactured a bespoke range of detergents specifically for medical devices. Formulated and tested to high standards for effective cleaning.

What is Solupak’s manufacturing capacity?

At Solupak we are proud to have a purpose-built facility that can produce more than 80,000 water soluble pods per machine, per shift, and the business has now produced over one billion sachets in total.

Is the entire manufacturing process handled in-house?

Yes, the entire manufacturing process is handled in house at our purpose built facility in Yorkshire. The manufacturing process in-house involves development, R&D, compatibility testing, formulation, powder blending, sachet and pod production ready for packaging and distribution.

What is the process behind manufacturing water soluble sachets and pods?

The water soluble manufacturing process starts with formula developing and testing the chemical or powder blend for its intended application. Then it is followed by powder blending or liquid preparation, film casting, and finally conversion, where the water soluble film is shaped, filled with product and sealed to create the finished water soluble sachet.

What sizes of water soluble sachets can Solupak manufacture and package?

Solupak manufactures water soluble sachets in the sizes range from 5g up to 2kg. Where a project needs a size, shape or format outside these ranges, Solupak’s team works with you to develop a bespoke solution to be manufactured and packaged.

How does Solupak support Soluclean product range?

Every Soluclean product is developed. manufactured and packaged by Solupak’s in-house team and produced at the same Yorkshire facility in Castleford.

Does Soluclean carry the same eco-credentials and hygiene standards as Solupak?

Yes. Soluclean has the same standards as Solupak — including Cruelty Free International, Vegan Society and Ecolabel accreditation. Tested to relevant EN standards. Every product of Soluclean sold also contributes a litre of clean drinking water to the Made Blue Foundation’s projects in developing countries.

Can Solupak create bespoke water soluble pods and solutions for cleaning products?

Solupak has its own brand of water soluble pods and solutions for cleaning products called soluCLEAN. This is where we develop bespoke formulations to sell under our brand. We do also offer a white label service, so you can get your hands on the products and develop your own brand and market presence.

How does the trigger-bottle dosing system work with Solupak’s sachets?

Solupak’s cleaning brand, soluCLEAN, works with a one pod = one application system. Its as simple as fill, add, shake and go! Once a pod is added to water, powder dissolves to form the product.

Do Solupak manufacture bespoke cleaning products?

If you have a specific product that you’d like us to re-develop, alter, transform into a powder (the list goes on) then that is certainly something we can support with. Want a change of colour our fragrance? We can work with you deliver exactly what you need to meet your requirements.

How does water soluble packaging reduce carbon footprint, for both Solupak and its customers?

The water soluble film after its used and dissolved in the water leaves minimal packaging behind unlike traditional plastic packaging. In addition, manufacturing a concentrated formulation into a lightweight film uses fewer raw resources than producing bulky, ready-to-use plastic containers, and removing the water from a formula until the point of use means smaller and lighter deliveries, and less warehouse space required to store.

What exactly is water soluble technology?

Water soluble technology uses a PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol) film or sachet to package a concentrated chemical or powder formulation. Removing the water from the formula at the manufacturing stage means far less packaging is needed compared with a traditional ready-to-use liquid, and the film itself dissolves completely alongside the product the moment it meets water.

Is “water soluble” the same as “water-based”?

No — they describe different properties. Water-based means a product already contains water as part of its formulation, such as a ready-mixed cleaning spray, whereas water soluble describes a material’s ability to dissolve completely in water and leave no residue.

What is an example of water soluble solution?

Water soluble solutions are used in different forms such as water soluble pods, water soluble sachets and water soluble films. Its biodegradability and sustainability triumphs over traditional chemicals.

What quality and environmental certifications does Solupak hold?

Solupak is accredited to ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 45001 (health and safety) and ISO 14001 (environmental management), and our products meet the requirements of Cruelty Free International (formerly the BUAV), the Vegan Society, Ecolabel and Nordic Swan.

Is water soluble film eco-responsible?

Yes, water soluble film is an eco-responsible alternative to traditional ready to use plastic packaging. Water-soluble film is a unique type of material made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a polymer that dissolves completely in water.

Is water soluble film safe?

Yes water soluble film is safe because the film dissolves in water, eliminating any requirement for complex disposal or recycling processes. Fewer resources are used to manufacture soluble films which leaves a smaller carbon footprint overall.

What are water soluble films?

Water soluble films are biodegradable and dissolve in water leaving no toxic residue and reducing smaller carbon footprint compared traditional chemistry. Water soluble plastics are used for water soluble pods, water soluble sachets, water soluble films and packaging.

What is an example of a water soluble packaging?

Water soluble packaging is manufactured for water soluble sachets, water soluble polymer film, water soluble sachets and water soluble pods. Water soluble packaging has a positive impact on the environment.

What are the advantages of water soluble packaging?

Due to the nature of water soluble packaging the environmental benefits are incredible, reducing global plastic waste, using less carbon emissions to manufacture, long term cost savings, unmatched convenience and large reductions in contamination risks

What is the difference between PVA pods and paper sachets?

PVA pods are made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, which dissolves completely in water leaving it totally clear with zero residue, making them ideal for professional environments where product purity matters. Paper sachets, break down rather than dissolve, leaving behind residue that can affect performance and block dispensing equipment.
